MEYCO Potenzas in Panama

2 Meyco Potenza Altimas have been delivered to the CCW job site in Changuinola, Panama, involving 4,3 km tunnel excavation that separates the dam from the power house. The name Altima is actually the Spanish translation of Maxima which is the huge spraying manipulator used as standard on MEYCO Roadrunners and as an added value option on MEYCO Potenzas.

Hydro-Electric Power Plant - joint venture “Changuinola Civil Works” or CCW.

AES Changuinola, a subsidiary of US-based AES Corporation, owns the project, with a consortium comprising two Danish companies E. Pihl & Søn and MT Højgaard - forming the Changuinola Civil Works Joint Venture - and Alstom of Brazil undertaking the works. The 150 MW plant will increase AES's total generation capacity in Panama to 620 MW, making AES the largest producer of electricity in the country.

The civil works on site have already started with access roads, camps and excavation works and the project is scheduled for completion in the end of 2010. The plant, Changuinola 75, will be located in the Changuinola River Basin, approximately 345 km northwest of Panama City in the Province of Bocas del Toro.

BASF UGC Central America has acquired both products and equipment in this important project. The combination of good communications, high quality equipment and local support in Panama for both machines and admixture was attractive for the customer.

Two separate commissionings, in June and late September, took place with comprehensive training provided jointly by Yves, Girard of BASF CC and Reto Blöchlinger of MEYCO Equipment. Taking part were all mechanical, and electric technicians in charge of maintenance of equipment on the job site, who enjoyed the courses which included comprehensive theoretical schooling in both machines and materials followed up by practical spraying practice.

Both machines are working well from the initial start-up and were primarily used for spraying shotcrete to stabilise slopes, before beginning with tunnel rock support at the end of October.
